Strength TogetHER 13- Session 5

14th August 2021.

HEY, IT’S BLOOD BE CAREFUL.

Not every living creature goes through the beautiful journey of menstruation. Though it has its own pros and cons, let’s consider it as a beautiful journey because it will give birth to a  new life in this world. But it is very necessary to take care of ourselves during those times. Menstrual hygiene is one of the main topics that should be discussed. Maintaining no hygiene at that time of the month can result in many incurable diseases.

We had our session on 14th August having the topic of menstrual hygiene. We had two moderators for this time Shalu Parajuli and Roshni Shrestha. Shalu Parajuli is currently working as a student nurse in OCVS study. She has worked as a member of the steering committee of BPKIHS student’s wing of Nepal national unit of UNESCO chair in bioethics for a period of two years. She is very enthusiastic about volunteering in different programs and has worked as a member of the Dharan medical student team in the awareness campaign on COVID 19 and mental health. Roshni Shrestha is currently a nursing instructor in national medical college birgunj l. She has also worked as a member of the dharan medical students team in the awareness campaign on covid 19 and mental health.

Our first speaker shared that she feels difficulty using period products. Pads cause her rashes. She also tried another alternative menstrual cup but couldn't insert it properly. She also tried using tampons but we don't easily get that in Nepal. She tried to order it online but it didn't come with an applicator. She discussed how period products choices are limited here in Nepal.

Our next speaker shared that chaupadi is still in practice in her village and the situation is pathetic. She shared that she doesn't like periods because she gets a lot of bad cramps and body pain. But then again she remembers how pathetic the situation of girls in her village is and how privileged she is here.

We live here in an urban area where we can get good facilities but when we see overall Nepal the situation of girls is very scary.

Another speaker shared her journey of using a Menstrual cup. She shared that at first she didn't have much knowledge about the cup and inserted it in the wrong way. After using it she finally understood how to use it. Period cramps are the worst cramps. These days in order to reduce those cramps roll-on has been launched in the market. We just have to roll it around our belly and the pain will be gone. She shared that she tried it and it worked like magic.

Our next speaker shared how still in urban areas too people follow the unnecessary menstrual no touching rules. She shared her story of how she didn't follow the rules and faced much criticism regarding it. She shared that it's all in the head of the people, if they believe it it will happen. She also got an idea to use roll-on.

After hearing all the story moderators also added some steps in menstrual hygiene. They also mentioned the facts about our country's menstrual hygiene situation.

The session was very interactive and interesting.
